Geotechnical Civil PE Practice Exam Scope
The geotechnical online practice exam covers the Geotechnical Civil discipline. This online practice exam is not only a simulated exam; it also serves as a comprehensive training resource in which every problem is explained in detail and presented after you complete your exam attempt. Upon completion of an exam, you will have access to fully worked-out, step-by-step solutions, with proper references to the applicable geotechnical design manuals, standards, and codes used in practice.

Your performance is broken down by geotechnical exam categories (NCEES knowledge areas), allowing you to clearly identify strengths and weaknesses within each knowledge area. The category results are presented upon completion of the exam.

Exam Structure & Question Design
The exam covers a broad range of topics and difficulty levels to ensure balanced preparation. Approximately 15–20% of the questions are low difficulty, 40–45% are medium difficulty, and 20–25% are high difficulty. In addition, roughly 30–35% of the questions are conceptual, designed to test true understanding of the material.

This online practice exam is designed to help you train, test, and evaluate your readiness for the NCEES Geotechnical Civil PE Exam while you also learn the conceptual background. This exam contains 80 original, non-AI-generated questions, developed and reviewed by experienced engineers, that closely reflect the coverage, style, and difficulty of the actual Civil PE Exam while also serving as an effective learning tool.

The geotechnical practice exam includes material from ten knowledge areas, referred to here as categories, consistent with the Geotechnical Civil PE exam as published on the NCEES official website. The categories and the approximate number of questions included per exam are listed below:

  • Site Characterization – 8–12 questions
  • Soil Mechanics, Laboratory Testing, and Analysis – 8–12 questions
  • Construction Observation, Monitoring, and Quality Assurance / Quality Control – 6–9 questions
  • Earthquake Engineering and Dynamic Loads – 5–8 questions

  • Retaining Structures (ASD or LRFD) – 10–15 questions
